The Winners and the Losers
By Carlo Longino, Thu Jan 10 00:00:00 GMT 2002
The mobile industry won't shed too many tears for 2001.
It's the New Year here in Texas. As usual, there's a certain sense of elation that comes with the change of year, but lately it's been more relief that we've made it through to 2002 rather than joyful reminiscing over the last 12 months.
You get the feeling things are about the same in the mobile world. 2001 really wasn't a successful year for it by any standard - global stock markets tanked, nearly half a million workers lost their jobs, equipment makers and handset manufacturers saw their fortunes slide as both industry and consumers tightened their purse strings.
Picking the losers of 2001 was much easier than picking the winners. All the innovations being bandied about at this time Carlo Longino is a freelance writer based in Austin, Texas. His previous experience includes work for The Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones Newswires, and Hoover's Online.
