Something is in the air at this year's Comdex - and it's not the smell of sin.
There was an air of uncertainty around the Las Vegas Convention Center this time. The Fall Comdex technology trade show, one of the industry's heaviest hitters, seems to have lost some of its luster. The experience has been a little underwhelming, low on the glitz and glamour, slimmed-down, and showing little sign of its gluttonous past.
But the tech industry's collective belt-tightening hasn't lessened its importance or slowed the product announcements, certainly not in the wireless realm. Wi-Fi has undoubtedly hit the big time, and mobile data is definitely starting to take hold. While some major manufacturers have stayed away, others are here in a big way, because of course one of the lessons of Vegas is you've got to bet big to win big.

Microsoft, of course, has made their presence known with a huge display, and a good chunk of that dedicated to mobile and portable devices. They're pushing the recently announced Tablet PC devices hard, and people carrying them around are generating a lot of attention - almost as much as the sandwiches in the media center at lunchtime.
