In a surprise move, Nintendo has announced the company's next-generation portable gaming device - codenamed Nintendo DS - which sports dual 3-inch displays and dual processors.
Despite the inevitable comparison to Sony's upcoming PlayStation Portable, Nintendo says its new gadget is unlike anything gamers have ever seen.
"We have developed Nintendo DS based upon a completely different concept from existing game devices in order to provide players with a unique entertainment experience for the 21st century," explains Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president.
Nintendo seems intent on maintaining its lead in the portable gaming arena. While Sony's announcement of the PSP introduced the concept of a premium mobile entertainment machine - along with a premium pricetag - market demand for such a device remains unproven.
Images of the device have not yet been released by Nintendo, but full details will be available during the official launch at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this May.
