Today NTT DoCoMo licensed the Symbian OS for for use in future FOMA (3G) handsets. While the contract is not exclusive, it is still a major win for Symbian.

DoCoMo who are the first operator to sign an license agreement with Symbian, will gain access to the OS source code with the rights to extend the OS and deliver the new bits to Symbian licensees who will produce new handsets for the FOMA network. Phones created in this partnership are not expected until 2005.

Neither Microsoft's Smartphone and Pocket PC Phone nor any of PalmSource's phone software currently are currently available in Japanese. However Microsoft's phone OSes are already available in Chinese, so it is clearly capable of double-byte languages. Symbian is available in Chinese and Japanese.
