CNN Puts Alternative to Mobile Browsing on Nokia 6600

CNN is introducing a java application that will download news updates by including it on the "try and buy" card that will ship with the Nokia 6600.

According to Digital Spy, the application, called CNNlive, can be used to download news updates free for a 14 day trial period. After the trial period, pricing of a monthly service fee will vary by country and the services users choose.

As WAP seems to weaken, and many users don't want to pay for a full browsing experience, small, focused applications present an interesting alternative. They can often offer a rich experience with a minimum of data. O2 already offers a broad number of range of useful applets from Action Engine on their XDA and other smart platforms.

Action Engine offers a standard platform to which operators, content providers and others can offer plugins for anything from news to movie times to travel reservations. While the CNNlive application only serves a single task, it is easy to see applications like this proliferating for standard interfaces (like Series 60). Is MTV mobile or 24-7 far off?
