Wi-Fi Still Stumping Telecoms

Staci D. Kramer's written an interesting piece for Unwired News about "how telecommunications executives still haven't figured out how to make money from Wi-Fi. But people want it, so the companies have to offer it." I think they're fighting a losing battle...
Wi-Fi's difficult to monetize, largely because it's already available for free in just about every major city in the US and Europe. How can telecoms compete with that? I like the concept of what Boingo offers, for example, but as time goes on it sounds more and more like the iTunes Music Store - you're paying for convenience and getting less and less of your money's worth as time goes on.
